If you like young adult novels, that are set in a fantasy land, with a
strong female character, and a touch (not a lot, just a bit) of romance... you
will love Vessel by Sarah Beth Durst
Vessel is set in a desert like land where clans are less dependent on their
oasis compared to their gods and goddesses. Every clan has their own deity and
every hundred years that deity will choose a person to serve as their vessel, so
they can come to earth... in the turn the person living inside the body before
the take over, gets to die. So of coarse the main character has to be a vessel.
Liyana has resigned herself to the fact that she will die so her goddess can
save her clan from the drought that has swept through the desert. However, the
time comes and Liyana performs her ritual, only for the goddess to not show.
Her clan decides that she is a failure. That she has been deemed unworthy by
their goddess. The clan leaders decide that they need to try to find a new
vessel, and instead of bringing the "taint" with them, Liyana gets to die in the
desert alone.
Hold up, wait a minute, in enters Korbyn. He is a trickster god of the Raven
Clan, who has already entered his vessel. He proceeds to tell Liyana how she has
not been demed unworthy, but that along with hers, five other deities have gone
missing. Even though he is the god of trickery she decides to follow and help
him on his journey, really though, what choice does she have. As she follows
Korbyn in the search for the other vessels and through the dangerous desert
getting closer and closer to her goddess, she starts to wonder the million
dollar question... Does she want to die so her goddess can live in her body? Or
is their a way her and her people can survive?
