The Following is a poem I won 1st place with at an All County Writing
Competition. It was done as an assignment in class, describing the European immigrants journey to America. It's told from the point of view of one person making the voyage.
They have spotted her,
Miss Liberty
She represents many things to us immigrants,
So many things to me.
She means the ending of this,
long perilous ride,
and the sickness and death.
She signifies that we are one step closer,
One step closer to all our dreams.
Our hopes
...And regrettably our fears.
Our dreams of having a home,
a job that will support our family.
Freedom to believe whatever we want to believe,
And not to be tired, poor, or starving.
But then she also brings the fearful questions.
The fears, of is it worth it?
Is it worth leaving our families?
Is it worth giving up what little we had,
everything we know?
For a chance, that it could not be what we had hoped for,
Not everything we were told.
But even if there is only a chance,
A chance that it could be better.
We were willing to take it
A chance to
better our lives.
